Black Friday, tax-free

Two shopping districts, one exit and no sales tax. Your plan for Thanksgiving weekend in Salem.

New Hampshire has no general sales tax, so every gift you buy in Salem costs what the tag says. Salem is the first exit over the Massachusetts line, and both of its big shopping districts sit off it.

The Mall at Rockingham Park has about 140 stores under one roof, with Macy’s, JCPenney, DICK’S House of Sport and Cinemark. Next door, Tuscan Village puts L.L.Bean, Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, West Elm, Arhaus, Nike and Ulta Beauty along a walkable main street, with free parking and a 50-foot tree.

The weekend

  • Friday, Nov. 27: Black Friday. The Holiday Shoppes at Tuscan Village open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 28: Small Business Saturday. Spend it with Salem’s own shops and makers.
  • Sunday, Nov. 29: the 55th Salem Holiday Parade, 1 p.m., down Main Street.

Know before you go

  • No sales tax on gifts; New Hampshire’s 8.5% meals and rooms tax still applies at restaurants and hotels.
  • I-93 Exit 1 for both the Mall and Tuscan Village.
  • MeVa Route 28 runs fare-free from Lawrence to Tuscan Village.
  • Hours vary on Thanksgiving weekend. Check each store.
